Physical Education Department

Physical Education develops pupil’s physical competence and confidence, and their ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It promotes physical skilfulness, physical development and a knowledge of the body in action.

Physical Education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles.

Pupil’s learn how to think in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive and challenging activities. They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their quality and effectiveness. Through this process pupils discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences, and make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

We have a gym, brand new Dance Studio, 4 large outdoor tennis courts, netball court and large outdoor playground. Also, we use local facilities at Westway e.g. Rock Climbing, Tennis, Baysixty 6 e.g. skateboarding, Portobello Green Gym e.g. Squash Courts.

Our PE facilities are also open to use by local primary schools, and a variety of local community residents and groups.

Curriculum

  • Key Stage 3&4 all have 1 hour and 40 minute PE lessons each week.
  • GCSE PE is offered at Year 10 along with JSLA and First Aid courses.

Dance Department

In 2007 our purpose built Dance studio was opened and is used by all students. Dance is offered at Key Stage 3 & 4. We offer GCSE Performing Arts at Key Stage 4. This course further develops the skills that students will have learnt from Key Stage 3, in performance, choreography and appreciation.

The main focus of the course is 'Dance as an art form'; in the same way that students study Music, Drama, Art or English Literature, students expecting to take a GCSE in Street Jazz, dancing to pop music for two years, will be sadly disappointed!
