ICT Department
The ICT Department has very high expectations for all of our students. The results in the department have been among the highest in the school over the last 5 years. In comparison to national and borough averages, the results in ICT at Sion Manning RC Girls’ School are significantly higher (usually 100% A*-C).
We place a special emphasis on increasing learner motivation and engagement, as well as on facilitating the acquisition of basic skills. Learning ICT at Sion Manning RC Girls’ School enables the manipulation of existing information and the creation of real-world products rather than the regurgitation of received information. Students also develop:
- the ability to decipher meaning and express ideas in a range of media; this includes the use of images, graphics, video, charts and graphs or visual literacy;
- the ability to find, evaluate and make appropriate use of information, via the use of ICT;
- the knowledge, skills and processes involved in understanding and using new technology, including computers, other hardware linked to computers, software applications and the internet;
- how to use and apply ICT - i.e. using computers, devices attached to computers and the internet - to support learning in other subject areas, for example measuring variables in science experiments using data-logging equipment, or searching the internet for information about World War II in history.
The importance of ICT in the curriculum
Globalization and technological change processes that have accelerated in tandem over the past fifteen years have created a new global economy “powered by technology, fuelled by information and driven by knowledge. One of the most commonly cited reasons for using ICT in the classroom has been to better prepare the current generation of students for a workplace where ICT, particularly computers, the Internet and related technologies, are becoming more and more ever-present. Technological literacy, or the ability to use ICT effectively and efficiently, is thus seen as representing a competitive edge in an increasingly globalizing job market.
