Fit to Achieve
We have also recently been invited to become one of the ‘Hubs’ in Central Government’s extensive development programme to drive forward PE and Sports. This is a Partnership Programme involving all schools within the Authority as it seeks to meet targets set by Central Government in sports opportunities for all its students. For us this invitation will begin an exciting new phase and with London becoming the host city for the Olympics our girls who are specialists in any particularly sport will have enhanced opportunities to excel. One of the senior girls is an Ambassador for Sport and is involved in a special programme which was launched last summer. Given we all need to be healthy our girls will benefit enormously from this opportunity being offered through our participation as the “Hub” in the Schools Sports Partnership.
Speaking, Listening and Writing for Success,
Scientists & Mathematicians for the 21st Century,
Virtual Learning and Modern Technology
We place a lot of emphasis on English, Maths, Science and ICT as these are the foundations of employment in the modern world. Our most able girls within Years 7 and 8 last year entered a prestigious national competition:- the Mathematics Challenge run by the University of Leeds. This competition involved 250,000 students from all over the country. We were very successful and had ‘Silver’ and ‘Bronze’ medal winners. The girls also raised £200 for the NSPCC and money for Breast Cancer. A special feature piece appeared in a local newspaper during our last summer term celebrating the success of these girls. The article also detailed the vital work of the staff, without it these girls would not have been able to succeed.
Year 9 girls have completed Mathematics Master Classes at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. This is an invite only opportunity for the most gifted student mathematicians in the whole country. This year we have been invited to send more girls. In science some younger girls were involved in a joint project with the BBC where they created their own films in conjunction with the BBC’s specialists and these were shown through the interactive whiteboards to all over members of our school community. Celebrating success is very important to us.
ICT is an essential to secure successful employment. The girls use the extensive ICT facilities in the various ICT suites and the Learning Resource Centre. E-learning is offered to all parents and girls. E-Learning is a facility which enables girls to access the internet and a range of learning tools. Recently we have been successful in a bid to secure computers for Year 7 for home learning. The Music Department has its own specialist ICT with brand new facilities comprising computers and keyboards on which they can create their own music with for example all the benefits of a full orchestra, big band or rock group.
